The Irish Mule is a close relative of the infamous Moscow Mule, except for one minor twist …. whiskey. All aspects are the same aside from reaching for a bottle of Irish whiskey over a bottle of vodka.

The first Irish Mule I had was at an Indian restaurant called Dancing Ganesha in Minneapolis. The drink instead went by the name of “Jameson Ginger” and was one of the featured drinks on the menu. The cocktail included Jameson Irish Whiskey, ginger liqueur, ginger ale, lime juice and garnished with a lime wheel.

Needless to say, I enjoyed the cocktail. So much so that I even had a second. I also went on to make this cocktail for friends at a New Year’s gathering and it was unanimously enjoyed.

Stories aside, let’s get to the recipe. The below recipe is what I use in crafting my own Irish Mule.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 ounces Irish Whiskey (I’ve used Jameson and Tullamore Dew, both work great)
  • ~6 ounces of Ginger Beer
  • Juice from 1/4 of a lime
  • Ice
  • Lime wheel, optional for garnish

Steps

  1. Fill a copper mug or lowball glass with ice.
  2. Pour 1.5 ounces Irish Whiskey in mug/glass
  3. Add juice from lime
  4. Top with ginger beer
  5. Stir to mix
  6. Garnish with lime wheel

Enjoy and thanks for reading!
